Can we legislate morality
Or is heart’s pull at the core
If no law can fully end a wrong
Then what is law even for?
Law reflects the health of governments
Shows the nation right or wrong
So we ban such crimes as murder, theft
That we may safe walk along
Good laws protect those most at risk –
Pauper, stranger, fatherless,
Some safeguarding those yet unborn
Of all people most helpless
How can those who preach life’s sancity
Seeking laws that hold babes dear,
With the next breath say “they just need Christ”
Who walk our same streets in fear?
Recognizing wrongs, injustices,
Using different sets of weights
Valuing some lives as precious
With a blind spot truly great
For once born their value varies
Based on merits earned in life,
On nation or group of origin
On risk of their spreading strife
For all of these souls Christ shed His blood
For them all calls us to care.
Dare we risk comfort, safety, and wealth
To live out the faith we share?
