In Your Midst

“Fear not, for I am with you,”

His whisper reaches me

But my eyes see all around me

The billows of the sea.

Angry waves now crashing,

Bringing chaos to my soul,

Tearing then, now lashing

At what was once my goal.

I see my loved ones aching,

See each falling tear,

Can feel it breaking through,

Each adding to my fear.

Fear that pain will find them,

Fear of coming night,

Fear of this next purging

Of the pain that comes with light.

“In your midst, I’m with you,”

I hear the voice again.

In my midst the God of Jacob,

Who walked and lived with men.

“I know your pain, your sorrow,

This burden that you bear.

I see your tomorrow,

I can take your care.”

“Right now you must rest here.

Right now, lay it down.

‘Round you I’m still working,

Ahead still waits your crown.”

“My love still goes deeper,

I still love them more.

I still hold you closer,

Lay it at my door.”

“Rest” and now I must heed–

My strength is at an end.

He will carry farther,

This Father, Brother, Friend.
