Based on Daniel’s prayer in Daniel 9
Alas, Yahweh, great awesome God
Keeps covenant made by Thy blood
Hast lovingkindness on Thy love,
Against Thee have we sinned
Iniquity held in our hearts
Wicked rebellion as our arts
From Thy commands we’ve turned athwart
With face set against Thee
Thou sent Thy servants in Thy name
Speaking to princes, kings the same
As to our fathers, to our shame
We list to not a word
To Thee, Lord, belongs righteousness
But open shame belongs to us
Unfaithful deeds by men of dust
Their crime against their God
Compassion and forgiveness, Thine
As shown to us on troubled times
From Egypt freed by might divine
Thy name known through the world
Thy righteous acts, now in accord
Turn anger, wrath, the purging sword,
Away from Thy mount now outpoured
By our sins made reproach
Now to Thy servant’s prayer incline
For Thy sake here let Thy face shine
On desolated sanctum Thine
My God, incline and hear!
Not on our merits, based our prayer
But Thy compassion great declare
Take action, Lord, forgive and hear
All we called by Thy name!
