To Midnight Sea

I cannot handle grace right now

His presence I must flee

Bright holiness would blind me

Weary heart can’t bend the knee

I climb a mountain, find Thee there

Depression’s depths can’t snuff Thy care

From east to west, my burdens bear

Dawn’s wings to midnight sea

Darkness descends, where art Thou now?

Light penetrates not here

A moment, have I truly reached

At last beyond Thy sphere?

No, here Thou hast preceded me

Alike in dark or light Thou sees,

Encircled, hemmed in, can it be

Thy presence everywhere?

Such wondrous knowledge I can’t grasp

For Thy thoughts, render praise

Like powder sand attempt to clasp

Futile their sum to gauge

Thou, Who hast knit my every part

Search me, my God, and know my heart

Where find offense, excise, carve out

Lead down Thy ancient ways
